Went to the new MINT museum of toys (opp. Raffles Hotel) with two girlfriends yesterday. Every tin, paper, plastic, rag and wooden toy has its year of origin, name and some even had background stories to them. And they all came from one man’s collection. Kudos to his wife.

Tintin

Betty Boop

My favourite from the whole collection: This doll is made by a Chinese doll maker called Michael Lee. He migrated to Hong Kong about the time of WW2 I think, and picked up doll making to raise funds for refugees like himself. Doll making became a lifelong mission for the noble man. All toys should be made with this much love and integrity.

Astro boy & girlfriend. Is that her panty? Love the bunny.

I yam what I yam

This pair of toys belonged to the Door of Hope collection. The toys were made by women and young girls who were saved by missionaries from forced prostitution. Find out more about it at the musuem!
Then, there were the politically incorrect toys.

This toy was named Busy Coolies.

Toys from China during the communist era
It was interesting. I wish there was more though. Which, considering that all these came from one man, is quite an unreasonable request. Anyhow, go have a look. It’s a very small museum. Took us about an hour. And bring your parents along if you can. Nothing beats reliving bygone days with your own children. They’ll probably enjoy it more than you do.
